William Harvey Mann

William Harvey Mann married Mary E. East October 31, 1858 in the St. Pancras Church in London, England. William was born on May 22, 1825 one of nine children born to Thomas Mann b. 1791 and Maria Greenman. Mary's father was William East (deseaced at time of marriage) and a brother William. Thomas Mann's father was Thomas also, mother Sarah. All from Hullavingon, Wiltshire England. William Harvey and Mary immigrated to Bloomington Illinois, McLean County where he purchased 4000 acres for $9.00 per acre.

William answered Lincolns call for men and volunteers with the 94th Illinois infantry, second brigade in 1862. He was commissioned a captain of Company I, "The original Band of Brothers" McLean County regiment and was fortunate enough to serve with Col. John McNulta.

REFERENCE- a. McLean County, in the war for the Union soldiers record b. The siege of Vicksburg. Miss. Chapt. XXXVL Page 320-321 c. History of the 94th Inllinois Infantry. The history (the siege of Vicksburg) where almost 20,000 soldiers were killed, idententifies the gallantry and heroism of Captain William H. Mann and his men by taking an enemy rifle pit. This action was identified and witnessed by Col. McNulta and General Grant. The ninety-fourth served just three years, marched 1200 miles, traveled by railroad 610 miles, and by steamer 6000 miles, took part in nine battles, sieges, and skirmishes and not one retreat! Captain William H. Mann resigned his commission at Brownsville, Texas 1864, returned to Bloomington, Illinois to take care of business and other matters at home.

As Captain Manns Great Great Grandaughter, I recommend reading the aforementioned reference material. His photo and Mary Elizabeth photos are displayed above. His military bible and mess kit are family heirlooms; and historical references.

In 1871 William and Mary had my Great Grandfather William Harrison Mann.

It is believed that William and Mary had two daughters, Lillian and Louella. Lillian married a Kennedy and settled in Hutchington, Kansas. The last known contact with Lillian was in 1937 when she wrote a letter to William Harrison's wife, Francis Caroline. She was sick and frail, most likely died shortly after letter was writen.
